Feed ingredients can retain African Swine Fever longer than previously thought.
A study at Kansas State University found that the virus dies more slowly over time, meaning that some might linger in ingredients shipped to North America from countries with the disease, and in particular from China.
Both the original and follow-up studies on how long the virus can survive were conducted under the leadership of Dr. Megan Niederwerder, an assistant professor of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology at Kansas State University.
More research will be undertaken to determine the effect of temperatures on the virus’s survival.
