COVID outbreak at Fearman’s

Eleven employees tested positive for COVID-19 last week at the Fearmans Pork Inc. plant in Burlington, reports U.S. magazine Meatingplace.

Six of the 11 work in a sales office and five others work in what was described as a “non-edible area” of the plant.

A spokeswoman for Fearmans parent Sofina Foods Inc. told Meatingplace in an email that the company sent the infected employees home to follow public health protocols. The plant also was disinfected twice and has remained open.

Fearmans also is taking mitigation steps such as physical distancing, face coverings, nightly sanitizing, Plexiglas dividers on production lines, temperature checks and handwashing measures, the spokeswoman told Meatingplace.

The company also is working with local public health officials to "properly manage these incidents," she wrote.

In British Columbia, regional public health officials reported that 13 workers at the J&L Beef Ltd. plant in Surrey tested positive for COVID-19.

The agency said there is evidence that the virus spread in the plant.

J&L has taken steps now, including screening of staff, contact tracing and deep cleaning. The affected workers are self-isolating.
