Derecho damage hits $7.5 billion

Damage estimates have climbed to $7.5 billion after a high-winds storm, called a derecho, blew through Iowa, Illinois, Minnesoto, Indiana and Ohio Aug. 10.

It is ranked as the second-worst storm to hit the United States this year, second to Hurricane Laura that caused $14 billion worth of damage along the Gulf Coast, also in August.

The derecho flattened thousands of acres of corn crops in Iowa, rendering them useless, and twisted grain bins off their footings, downed trees and damaged buildings.
