Burnbrae Farms Inc. has announced plans to build a 100,00-square-foot egg-grading and egg-processsing facility in Strathroy.
It will replace one on Eldor Street that is now surrounded by residences and is about 50 years old.
The new plant will be in Molnar Industrial Park and is scheduled to open in 2016.
“We have outgrown that location and we need more space,” said Margaret Hudson, the company’s chief executive officer. She has taken over from her aging father, Joe Hudson, who developed the business to the largest in Canada in three respects – egg production, egg grading and egg processing
The new plant will “incorporate cutting-edge egg grading, automation, food safety, and environmental technologies,” she said.
Strathroy is also home to GrayRidge Eggs, Canada's second-largest egg producer, egg grader and egg processor.
The two have been accused, but neither charged nor convicted, of collusion on pricing and market sharing.
