Ontario farmers plan more corn, fewer soybean acres

Statistics Canada said its survey of planting intentions indicate there will be a five per cent increase in corn, a 7.8 per cent decline in soybeans in Ontario and a 15.1 Canada-wide increase in winter wheat planted last fall.

Canada-wide canola planting intentions were down by 1.7 per cent when the survey was conducted in December.

That has likely changed a lot since China has imposed a 100 per cent tariff on canola and canola meal and the U.S. a 25 per cent tariff.

What’s not clear is what farmers will plant instead, although wheat seems a likely possibility.
