Bill Bearss has been chosen to chair the Ontario Broiler
Hatching Egg and Chick Commission, taking over from Jim Rickard who is retiring
from the post.
Bearss becomes the third chairman of the commission, a post
that is key to mediating between equal numbers of directors representing
hatching chick producers and their clients, the hatcheries.
The first chairman was the late Murray Gaunt who held the
position while he was a farm reporter for CKNX broadcasting station in Wingham.
Bearss has a wealth of experience in the poultry industry,
including six years as general manager of the Chicken Farmers of Ontario
marketing board.
That board’s members are customers buying the chicks
produced by the hatching egg commission’s members.
Bearss will take over when the annual meeting ends March 5.
Rickard had just finished serving as chairman of the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food Appeal Tribunal when he was appointed chairman
of the hatching egg commission.
