Manitoba reports PEDv detected

Manitoba has it’s first case of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus, according to the Chief Veterinarians Office.

Karl Kynoch
Karl Kynoch, president of Manitoba Pork, commended the farmer involved for co-operating fully.

It’s a wean-to-finish operation and the farmer and officials have implemented measures to keep the highly-contagious and deadly virus from spreading to other hog farms.

“It is your responsibility to make sure that all trailers are clean before they back up to your barn,”  Kynoch advised farmers.

In Ontario, the virus has now shown up on 13 hog farms since Feb. 12.

The virus is widespread across the United States since the first case in April in Illinois. The largest number of farms with the virus are in Iowa and North Carolina which are high-production states.
There are now more than 3,000 farms infected in 23 states.

The virus survives longer in cooler weather, so it has been spreading faster and further every week.
