A&P bankrupt again

A&P supermarket chain, now operating only in the United States, is bankrupt – again. It’s the second time in five years.

This time it is under court protection from creditors under Chapter 11 of the U.S. bankruptcy legislation.

It says it has a deal to sell 120 stores for $600 million and will close 25 stores.

It says it’s trying to preserve as many jobs as possible.

In Canada, Metro Inc. now operates all the stores that were once part of A&P.

The U.S. company operates A&P, Best Cellars, Food Basics, The Food Emporium, Pathmark, Superfresh and Waldbaum's supermarkets.
