Wilbur Shantz dead at 88

Wilbur Shantz, one of the founders of United Breeders, has died at age 88.

He was born on a farm at Pinehill, west of Kitchener, started as an artificial insemination technician with the Waterloo Cattle Breeding Association in 1952, rose to general manager in 1963 and then assistant general manager when Waterloo merged with Lambton and Central Ontario AI units to become United Breeders Inc.

He was a president of Semex Canada and the Ontario and Canadian Animal Breeders associations.

He was a leader in the United Brethren in Christ church at New Dundee.

I knew him in all of those roles. He was an outstanding gentleman.
