Manitoba researchers have learned that Porcine
Epidemic Diarrhea virus can survive nine months in hog-manure lagoons.
In the beginning, the virus counts were high in
the top and middle layers of the lagoon. Later the counts were highest at the
botoom of the lagoons.
They ran their tests on two lagoons and in one
the virus was still active after fall, winter and into the spring when 28 per
cent of the samples still had active PED virus.
The research was carried out by Hein M. Tun of the University of Manitoba, John P.
Carney of the Manitoba Livestock Manure Management Initiative, Mark Fynn of the
Manitoba Pork Council, Lorne Grieger
of the Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute, and Ehsan
Khafipour of the University of Manitoba.
