Canadian company exports Australian beef

Now here’s a mystery.

The Food Safety Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture has issues with Australian beef shipped into its markets by Toronto-based Bassett and Walker International Inc.

Meatingplace Magazine reports that Bassett and Walker is recalling the Australian beef, but doesn’t say why.

Could it be that somebody is trying to circumvent U.S. quotas on imports of Australian beef by passing it through Canada? And, if so, would that not use up Canada’s import quotas with no benefits to Canadian consumers?

The products were distributed to retail outlets and restaurants in the San Diego, Calif., area. The products subject to recall are:
  • 55 pound boxes containing “Beef Lips” Manufactured by Australian Est. 4, JBS PTY Limited
  • 55 pound boxes containing “Beef Lips” Manufactured by Australian Est. 170, JBS PTY Limited
  • 55 pound boxes containing “Beef Lips” Manufactured by Australian Est. 235, JBS PTY Limited
  • 55 pound boxes containing “Beef Lips” Manufactured by Australian Est. 517, JBS PTY Limited

FSIS said it discovered the problem during routine FSIS surveillance activities.
