A duck farm near St. Catharines has had an outbreak of avian
influenza.
Even though the strain is in the low-pathogenicity category,
the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has imposed a quarantine and ordered the
flock destroyed.
It’s likely that there will be a quarantine zone that will
include a number of commercial poultry operations and that the poultry industry
will go on heightened biosecurity alert.
The CFIA is conducting tests to determine the precise strain
of influenza involved.
