The United States Senate has passed a bill that will require
GMO labeling.
It now goes to a committee to try to mesh this bill with one
passed by the House of Representatives.
While the food industry has long opposed mandatory GMO
labeling, arguing that there are no food safety or nutritional differences, it
reluctantly supports this bill because it’s better to have one national
standard than 50 different state regulations.
GMO labeling advocates are also reluctant supporters of the
bill because they note there are no penalties for failure to comply.
