Fire in Kitchener-area wheat field

A fire in a wheat field south-west of Kitchener sent up a white plume of smoke that could be seen throughout Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge Tuesday afternoon.

The fire may have started from sparks from a combine.

It swept across 38 acres before North Dumfries Township fire department put it out.

Chief Robert Shantz said that a spark would be enough to ignite a blaze.

“With these dry conditions, that’s all it takes,” he told CTV News.

The field is near Fischer-Hallman Drive and New Dundee Road, which is the south-western corner of Kitchener.
