CFIA begins search for TB source

The Canadian Food Inspection has begun testing in 70 herds to determine whether they were the source of tuberculosis that infected seven animals on a large Alberta operation.

A widespread effort to prevent the spread of the disease has been underway for more than a year, 11,500 cattle have been slaughtered at the one operation where a cow was sent to a U.S. packing plant and tested positive for TB.

Six more infected animals were detected by the CFIA at that operation.

The testing now includes 31 herds in Alberta, 36 in Saskatchewan and three in Manitoba. So far four have been tested and found free of TB.

The CFIA expects this testing to be done by the end of the year.

So far 97 premises that were infected have been released from quarantine, including the one that had infected animals and owned cattle on more than a dozen premises.
