Denmark is planning to build a fence almost 50 kilometres
long to keep out wild boars from Germany.
The Danes are worried that there is African Swine Fever
circulating in Germany’s wild boar population and that poses a threat to
Denmark’s lucrative pork industry.
The disease exists in Poland,
the Czech republic, Romania, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and has recently moved
closer to Denmark, according to the government.
The Danes also announced
larger fines for illegal food imports and failure to properly clean animal transportation
vehicles.
Hunters have been given
permission to hunt wild boar at night; Germany has extended its wild-board
hunting season to any time of the year.
