Feds to bolster trade-related research

The federal government says it will spend $1 million on research related to world trade standards.

The research will be aimed at meeting trade standards under the the Codex Alimentarius, the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

The researchers will also work to ensure that technical regulations and standards do not unduly restrict global trade while at the same time protecting food safety, animal and plant health, the government said.

The $1 million commitment seems pretty slim, given the issues at stake.
