Dairy Farmers of Canada says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s comments about dairy trade concessions are "troubling" and "worrisome".
The DFC was reacting to comments Trudeau made on NBC's Meet the Press that Canada was considering allowing U.S. dairy greater access to the Canadian market as part of the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Trudeau is also being asked to move now, not wait until July 1, to impose retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. in reaction to its 25 per cent tariff on steel and 10 per cent on aluminum.
Canada has also proposed a number of additional tariffs, including ones on ketchup, maple syrup and nail poilish.
If the tariff “war” is not soon resolved, some trade analysts are saying the North American Free Trade Agreement may be dead.
Negotiations are stalled.
