Greely beef plant hit by COVID-19

Bulletin
The governor shut the plant down on Sunday and JBS said it remain closed "indefinitely".

The huge beef-packing plant at Greeley, Colorado, has 300 employees suspected of being infected with COVID-19, according to CNN reporting which cited United States Vice-President Mike Pence.

Two employees have died.

The local health official began investigating working conditions after more than 30 employees tested positive for COVID-19.

Weld County’s health department said Thursday that concerns at the JBS USA facility include the proximity of workers to each other and employees working while they are sick.

If the plant does not comply with the county’s public health order, the plant could be closed but compliance is the “preferred solution”, the statement said.

The union said about 830 refused to show up for work on Monday a week ago because of fellow employees were sick. It was the following day that one died.

On Good Friday the union asked the governor to shut down the plant.

The plant at Greely is a business that includes one of the largest beef feedlots in the United States.

Local officials said it's challenging to test employees because many are immigrants from Mexico and many other countries who do not understand English well.
