United States President Donald Trump has just announced that there will be more subsidies for farmers.
This is coming on top of billions given them earlier to compensate for trade losses related to Trump's tariff war with China.
With open trade between Canada and the U.S., these subsidies leave our farmers at a considerable disadvantage.
Despite months of pleas, especially from beef producers, our federal government has offered nothing new.
And in response to the COVID-19 impact on farmers, all that Canadian governments, both federal and provincial, have offered is more loans, more debt which adds to Canadian farmers' competitive disadvantage.
This is not fair.
The result of the combined whammy's of the U.S. trade-related subsdies and the upcoming COVID-19 subsidies will be a weakened and diminished Canadian agriculture economy.
