A new wave of African Swine Fever has wiped out at least 20 per cent of the hogs in Northern China, reports Reuters. News agency.
China had been working to rebuild its hog herd from the 2018 outbreak, but new ASF strains – combined with a cold winter and high hog density – have again led to large losses.
One result is price inflation for weaners, up from 996 yuan in November to 1,800 in March.
Reuters said it doesn’t yet know whether ASF has spread to Southern China.
The United States Department of Agriculture reported its pork exports to China and Hong Kong are up ty 56 per cent from 2019.
