Windsor shelter for migrant workers funded

After Windsor announced in February that the isolation centre for COVID-19-infected farm workers would close because it was short by $2 million required, the federal government has stepped up with $17.8 million to keep it open for a year, starting April l.

The centre is for temporary foreign workers who test positive.

Public Health Minister Patty Hajdju said “protecting essential workers, especially those who are supporting Canada’s food chain and economy, is critical.”

The site can accommodate 125 workers.

Meanwhile, the Waterloo Public Health Unit announced that employers of temporary foreign workers will have to meet standards for their safety.

That includes having a plan, protective equipment and safe facilities.

Its orders are similar to those in other Ontario health unit districts.
