The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said it confirmed the highly-pathogenic strain of H5N1 avian influenza in these places on April 5:
- City of Markham, Ontario (poultry flock)
- Municipality of Chatham-Kent, Ontario (poultry flock)
- Mountain View County, Alberta (poultry flock)
- Mountain View County, Alberta (poultry flock)
- Ponoka County, Alberta (poultry flock)
And in these places on April 5:
- Prince Edward County, Ontario (backyard flock)
- City of Markham, Ontario (poultry flock)
It has also spread rapidly in the United States, particularly to turkey flocks in the northern Mid-West states such as Wisconsin.
