Ontario has banned bird shows, sales, fairs, sport and educational displays until May 9 to prevent the spread of highly-pathogenic avian influenza.
In a nutshell, there’s a ban on commingling birds.
There are also quarantine zones around farms that have experienced outbreaks or the virus. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency enforces the zones banning all poultry-industry traffic in and out.
The infected flocks are euthanized and property owners must undertake a thorough and onerous cleaning and disinfecting.
The quarantines zones are:
April 4 – Township of Centre Wellington (poultry flock)
April 2 – Township of Selwyn (backyard flock)
March 31 – Township of Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation formerly known as Cape Croker reserve (backyard flock)
March 30 – Township of Woolwich (poultry flock)
March 28 – Township of Zorra (poultry flock)
March 27 – Township of Guelph/Eramosa (poultry flock)
There are also quarantines in three other locations that have yet to be confirmed as infected.
