Top-ups provided for two environment programs

The federal and Ontario governments are adding $12 million to existing programs for farmers to improve the environment.

There is $5 million more for the Resilient Agricultural Landscape Program (RALP) to bring it up to $68 million.

It supports eligible farmers to complete projects such as reducing tillage, creating water retention ponds and other projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sequester carbon.

There is $5 million for the Agricultural Stewardship Initiative which complements RALP with help for farmers to modify and adapt their equipment and operating practices.

There is another $7 million for the On-Farm Applied Research and Monitoring (ONFARM) program. That increase will be spread over five years.

Ontario Agriculture Minister Lisa Thompson said “this initiative will be a critical component in giving our farmers the tools they need to make decisions that will enable safe, top-quality food production and agricultural sustainability goals.”
