Eastern Meat
Solutions of Etobicoke has been fined $200,000 for
cheating on meat labels.
The Canadian
Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) investigation determined that the company
falsely labelled 4,557 cases of meat weighing 125,697 kg.
The labels were
wrong to claim prime rib boneless beef trim, Angus boneless beef trim and
sirloin boneless beef trim.
The market value
of the meat at the time of its detention by the CFIA was $613,572.
The court
ordered all the detained meat be disposed of by rendering.
The company pleaded guilty to five charges, resulting in the
fine levied under the Food and Drug Act which has regulations about false
labelling.
I wonder how much fraud the company did before it was caught. I think the judge ought to have banned the owners from the meat business - forever.
