AMCO faces further discipline

The Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG) is pondering disciplinary action against AMCO Produce Inc. following its court conviction for misrepresenting the origin of vegetables.

The company pleaded guilty to three charges earlier this month and was fined $210,000.

The CFIA also seized and dumped produce from AMCO in 2013 and 2016, according to records on its website.

The board issued a news release to say it “does not condone these actions and has been following the legal process closely.

“This is an issue that is of great concern to greenhouse vegetable producers.

‘We continually work hard to differentiate our products in the marketplace, and to make consumers aware of the advantages of purchasing Ontario greenhouse vegetables.

“Incorrectly labelling imported produce as being Ontario product not only misleads consumers, but also negates the investment that Ontario producers make every day into producing a superior product to meet consumer demands,” the board said.

AMCO labeled produce imported from Mexico as Ontario produce.
