Dr. Stephanie Cottee is leaving the Ontario Pork Marketing
Board where she worked on animal welfare protocols and is joining Maple Leaf
Foods Inc. to address animal and poultry welfare issues for the meat processor.
It’s another indication that animal welfare issues are
gaining traction with the public and meat processors are becoming more
proactive.
Hog packers have been under intense political pressure to
refuse to source hogs from farms that use crates to house gestating sows. Most
in the U.S. and Canada have agreed to a deadline of 2017.
Cottee is filling a new position - Leader, Animal Wellness.
She worked for the Chicken Farmers of Ontario marketing
board before she was hired by Ontario Pork.
Dr. Cottee has a PhD in farm animal behaviour and welfare
and a Master of Science in farm animal behaviour and welfare from the
University of Guelph.
She was a sessional professor at Guelph and holds B.Sc.
degree in zoology from the University of Toronto.
