All of the equipment from the Quality Meat Packers plant in
Toronto has been put up for auction via the internet.
Hilco International is conducting the auction which will
close Sept. 11.
Quality went into receivership to restructure its finances,
then into bankruptcy, earlier this summer.
It’s packing plant in Mitchell followed into bankruptcy a
few weeks later.
It was Ontario’s second-largest hog-slaughtering plant and
had developed considerable success exporting premium cuts to Japan.
Ontario’s largest hog slaughtering plant, in Burlington, has
gone through three ownerships in recent years – sold by Maple Leaf Foods Inc.
to an investment company in Florida, then to its current owners, Sofina Foods.
The third-largest plant, Conestoga Meat Packers in Breslau,
close to Kitchener, is a cooperative owned by hog farmers.
