There is frustration in Manitoba that a third outbreak of
Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus has been identified his week.
The first case was in February and the second in May. One of
those barns had a repeat outbreak in July.
Manitoba’s chief veterinary office (CVO) confirmed
Friday and announced Monday that a sow farm in the province’s southeast is the
third to have animals with the PED virus (PEDv).
“Although
it is disheartening to see another case arise, we should use this as a lesson
learned and elevate our biosecurity practices, especially with cold, wet
weather looming,” Manitoba Pork said in a statement Tuesday.
“As we
know, the risk of the virus spreading increases exponentially in colder
seasons.”
Ontario has had 60 outbreaks, the most recent ones in
June and July.
