Cargill is buying ADM’s chocolate business

Cargill Inc. is buying six chocolate facilities from Archer-Daniel-Midland Co. (ADM), three of them in the United States and three in Europe.

That will bring Cargill’s total to 24 chocolate and cocoa facilities, but still leave it trailing Barry Callebaut AG of Switzerland.

Barry Callebaut processes about 1.2 million tonnes a year, Cargill about 300 million and ADM about 200 million.

As part of the deal, which is scheduled to close next year, ADM will close its cocoa-processing plant at Hazleton, Pa., and lay off about 90 workers.
