The number of outbreaks of Porcine Epidemic
Diarrhea virus declined sharply over the summer, just as veterinarians predicted.
The virus survives longer under cold winter and
cool fall and spring temperatures.
The United States Department of Agriculture’s National
Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) reported that 53 tests for PEDV proved
positive out of 672 conducted in the week ended Sept. 5.
That compares with 204 postive test results in
April.
There have been 60 outbreaks in Ontario, but
none since June 21.
So far 8,316 positives have been reported by
USDA since Nov. 1, 2013.
The same report also officially added Utah as
the 31st state to report cases of PEDV, with one sick animal.
