Grocers, Vermont in slanging match over GMO

The grocery industry and Vermont’s governor Peter Shumlin are into a slanging match this week over Vermont’s new law requiring labeling for genetically-modified foods.

The grocers say they could face fines that would mount into the millions if they inadvertently ship some products without the GMO labels to Vermont.

Shumlin has fired back, challenging them to use the GMO labeling for all their nation-wide business.

The Grocery Manufacturers Association has filed a lawsuit to block implementation of the new law.

Shumlin and Vermont could do more for consumers by passing legislation to force transparency over food safety.
