Charges finally laid in Chilliwack

Animal cruelty charges have finally been laid in the much-publicized case of animal abuse at Chilliwack Cattle Co., Canada’s largest dairy farm.

A total of 20 charges have been laid against the farm and seven employees.

Mercy for Animals publicized a video that was shot by a worker it placed on the company’s payroll and the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals publicly asked in June, 2014, that charges be laid.

Sixteen of the charges are related to treatment of cattle and four to the treatment of a pigeon.

Farm owner Jeff Kooyman said when the video was released that he found it “horrifying to watch.”

He and five corporate directors are included in some of the charges.
