Sobeys recalling broccoli slaw

Sobeys is recalling broccoli slaw after Listeria monocytogenes was identified in the mix.

The recall is nation-wide. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says there have been no reported illnesses from people who have eaten the slaw.

Meanwhile, Mexican researchers say they have found that extracts from avocado seeds can control microbes that cause listeria.

The Journal of Food Science carries the report from researchers at Tecnologico de Monterrey in Mexico.

They found that enriched extract from avocado seeds worked just as well as two brand-name synthetic antimicrobials.

This would give the food industry an alternative that is natural.

It’s likely to be safe because people already eat actetogenins from avocado pulp at levels greater than needed to curb listeria, but the researchers say further work is required to substantiate that safety.
