Meat recall expands

The already-huge meat recall from dozens of stores in the greater Toronto area has expanded again.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has listed the stores marketing ground beef, veal and pork on its website, saying they might be contaminated with food-poisoning E. coli 0157:H7.

Newmarket Meat Packers Limited in Newmarket, Ontario, is the supplier.

The recall began with veal, but the CFIA added ground beef and pork as it delved into the investigation and has been adding more retail outlets daily, many in the Richmond Hill, Maple and Markham area.

E. coli 0157:H7 bacteria can be quite dangerous, especially for the very young, very old and those with compromised immune systems such as happens when undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.

The toxins (poison) the bacteria produces can also ruin kidneys, as happened to a number of people in Walkerton after they drank contaminated water.
