Feds give money to update organics

The federal government is granting financial support so Canada’s organic industry can complete an update required every five years to meet global trading standards.

The Canadian General Standards Board requires sector consultation and charges a fee for updates.

“This announcement means the organic industry in Canada can breathe a sigh of relief,” said Simon Jacques, a board member for the Organic Council of Ontario.

“Without the review, the Canada Organic brand would be on a very shaky foundation. We’re all pleased to hear that this government is willing to support and improve what we have all worked so hard to create and maintain,” he said.

He is Ontario’s representative to the national organic-industry body.
