Livestock board makes minor changes

Minor changes to the Livestock Financial Protection Board came into effect this week.

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said in a year-end news release that the changes provide “more flexibility around quorum and ensure the board composition better reflects the needs of the sector.”

Board members are one each from the Beef Farmers of Ontario, the Canadian Meat Council and the Ontario Livestock Auction Markets Association and two appointed by Ontario Agriculture Minister Ernie Hardeman.

The board collects checkoff fees and administers a compensation fund “to protect producers and other sellers of beef cattle in the event of defaults on payments by licensed buyers.”

The board will also begin picking up some expenses that were previously covered by OMAFRA.
