The University of Guelph is getting $2.35 million from the provincial government to research livestock health, well-being, productivity and competitiveness.
The projects are to:
▪ _Identify genetic markers to reduce disease and infections in sheep and cattle;
▪ _Improve access to veterinary services and support in rural and remote areas;
▪ _Develop a surveillance program for milk tanks on dairy farms;
▪ _Examine newborn milk in the development of neonatal dairy calves;
▪ _Evaluate novel methods to prevent bovine respiratory disease;
▪ _Identify disease-causing pathogens in sheep and goats;
▪ _Validate the use of probiotics to support the health, and
▪ _Investigate alternative control measures for E. coli diarrhea in pigs.
"The research we’re investing in will provide farmers with some of the latest knowledge and tools they need to keep farm animals and food safe,” said Ontario Agriculture Minister Ernie Hardeman.
