The European Union has imposed tariffs of 25 per cent on United States blueberries, dates, grapefruit and sweet potatoes and some other products.
The tariffs are allowed in the follow-up to a World Trade Organization ruling that the United States broke its trade rules by imposing tariffs on Airbus aircraft.
The American Farm Bureau Federation calculated that U.S farm products make up more than 60 per cent of the EU tariffs on about $4 billion worth of imports.
The EU also put in place a 15 per cent retaliatory tariff on civilian aircraft and some other manufactured goods.
“As is frequently the case, U.S. food and agriculture producers are unfortunately being dragged into a dispute that they had nothing to do with,” said the American Farm Bureau.
