Sonny Purdue is a former governor of Georgia.
David Purdue has been a Member of Congress and is attempting to move up to the Senate. Georgia election rules require a candidate to garner 50 per cent of the votes cast to win.
In January he will face John Ossoff.
The other Georgia senate seat is also up for election and will also move to a run-off vote Jan. 5.
In that race, incumbent Senator Kelly Loeffler is running against Democrat Raphael Warnock, senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.
If both Democrats win, the Senate will be tied and vice-president-elect Karmala Harris would be able to break tie votes.
If either Purdue or Loeffler win for the Republicans, that party will retain its Senator majority.
