Do Good Foods of Bedminister, New Jersey, is collecting food waste from grocery stores and making it into chicken feed.
Do Good Chicken, is scheduled to be available in supermarkets, restaurants and foodservice locations in early 2022.
The new effort includes a new production facility in Fairless Hills, Penn., that will be able to process 160 tons of surplus food from 450 grocery stores daily, or 60,000 tons annually.
Do Good Foods said it plans to build 20 similar facilities by 2025. Nuveeen Corp. has backed it with $169 million.
Purchasing one Do Good Chicken product per year will prevent one pound of surplus food from going to waste, the company said.
It hopes to expand to other sustainable protein products.
