Eighty-nine organic milk producers in Northeastern United States lost their contracts when global giant Danone abandoned the market.
Now Janet Mills, governor of Maine, has promised to continue to fight for 14 farmers in her state.
“As the granddaughter of Aroostook County potato farmers, I know firsthand that our farmers are pragmatic, tough, resilient, and driven people,” said Mills.
“My Administration will do everything we can to fight for this important industry . . .
“We’re going to give it all we’ve got, because every dairy farm in Maine is important to our state, organic or otherwise, and is vital to our culture, our health, our environment, and to our economy as a whole.”
Horizon is the Danone-owned company that had organic milk contracts with farmers, most of them in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
