B.C. dairy farm regains licence

The British Columbia milk marketing board has restored a licence to the dairy farm where videos showed animal abuse.

The marketing board suspended the licence for Cedar Valley Farms after an activist group went public with videos taken at the farm.

There are a number of conditions attached to restoring the farm’s licence, including oversight by an independent consultant who will oversee the farm’s management and staff and report regularly to the marketing board.

An independent veterinarian will also regularly audit the herd’s health and welfare. The marketing board said it will also conduct surprise inspections.

Cedar Valley Farms issued a statement last week saying it is trying to “get to the bottom of any activities” that differ from its animal welfare policies.

But protestors have gathered in front of the veterinary clinic of Dr. Rich Vanderwal, who is part owner of Cedar Valley Farms.

They want his veterinary licence revoked.

And they also want surveillance cameras installed in every dairy farm in the province because they say owners have proven incapable of policing themselves.
