Milk price hike coming

The Canadian Dairy Commission has sent out a memo saying the pricing formula indicates a 1.77 per cent increase for Feb. 1, drawing an immediate objection from the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers (CFIG).

The CFIG said an increase would be contrary to the government’s recently-announced objective to stabilize grocery prices.

The CFIG wrote back that it will invoke the “exceptional circumstances mechanism” which requires the Canadian Dairy Commission to consult with stakeholders before increasing prices.

In the past the Canadian Restaurant Association has frequently objected to dairy price increases.

I wonder whether the mega-millions the feds gave dairy farmers as trade compensation was figured into the Canadian Dairy Commission formula.
