Walmart getting into milk processing

Walmart will build a $350 million milk processing plant at Valdosta, Georgia, to serve about 750 of its stores in the area.

It comes after Walmart announced earlier this year that it’s getting into meat processing.

That is the Olathe meatpacking plant near Kansas City that will take big cuts of beef from a slaughterhouse in North Platte, Nebraska, and turn them into single serving pieces, packaged and priced for Walmart stores across the Midwest.

The facility will handle the kind of work that grocery store butchers do — at factory scale.

In Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp said  “we’re excited that Walmart will soon tap into Georgia’s No.-1 industry and open new opportunities in the Lowndes County area. We look forward to many years of success as this project further strengthens our thriving agriculture industry.”

The new facility will provide fresh dairy products using ingredients sourced from local farmers. Operations are due to begin in late 2025.

Costco has invested $1 billion in chicken processing, feed manufacturing, a hatchery and both contract growing and its own barns in Nebraska.
