Bumper potato crop

Canadians produced a bumper harvest of potatoes this year - 22 per cent more than in 2020 and 3.7 per cent more than last year.

The West accounted for all of this year’s increase because yields were abnormally high.

The United States also has a bumper crop, also because of high yields west of the Mississippi river.

There are so many on the west coast that some will likely be destroyed.

“In my 30 years in the industry I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Dale Lathim, president of the Potato Marketing Association of North America.

Potato Growers of Ontario has not responded to an Ontario Farmer request made weeks ago for information on this year’s crop.
