The American Meat Institute is praising United States politicians for allowing the continued use of xylazine to sedate animals ready for slaughter.
There were concerns that imports would be banned because drug dealers have been adding xylazine powder to fentanyl. It is not approved for human use.
Meat packers use xylazine to quickly sedate sick or injured cattle and that is a benefit for both the cattle and the workers handling them, said Julie Anna Potts, president and chief executive officer of the North American Meat Institute.
The bill still needs Senate approval.
