Food prices were 4.7 per cent higher in December than the year before, reports Statistics Canada.
That’s a faster increase than the overall rate of inflation that came in at 3.4 per cent.
The increase in food prices came the same day that economist Sylvain Charlebois reported that Loblaws is slashing its discounts from 50 to 30 per cent for products on the cusp of best before dates.
Charlebois notes that the company, which is Canada’s largest grocer, failed to issue a new release about the policy change until his food lab at Dalhousie University inquired and said it borders on collusion with the other big Canadian supermarket chains because Loblaws said the change brings it in line with competigtors.
Who, pray tell, handles public relations for Loblaws? And why is the company so out of step with the public?
