China bans pork from Spain

China has banned pork from Spain because of African Swine Fever found in two wild boars, the first report of the disease there since 1994.

After China stopped buying from 12 companies, Spain decided to halt all pork exports to China.

Last year, Spain was China’s number one source of pork imports at a value of $999.42 million euros. This year, Spanish exports had been even stronger at a billion Canadian dollars.

There is speculation that China will buy more from the United States.

In March China imposed a 25 per cent tariff on pork from Canada.
